about
The devastating earthquake and tsunami known as the Indian Ocean Tsunami (IOT) on December 26, 2004 became one of the biggest disasters in modern humanity, claiming more than 283,000 lives. Tragically, 85-90% of these were in Aceh Province. In response, Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) recognized the urgent need to focus on disaster research. In 2006, USK established the Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC). A decade later, in 2016, TDMRC was awarded as a leading research center by the Ministry of Education and Culture, with the status of Science and Technology Center of Excellence (PUI) in Tsunami Mitigation. As a key player in the field of disaster science, TDMRC is committed to advancing science through research, education, and community service with a focus on disaster management. Among its many initiatives, TDMRC hosts the annual Aceh International Workshop and Expo on Sustainable Disaster Recovery (AIWEST-DR), which serves as a platform to share research findings and encourage discussion on sustainable recovery solutions.
The AIWEST-DR conference for 2025 is returning in Hybrid Mode
Inviting scholars, government officials, and professionals to exchange insights and the latest developments in disaster risk mitigation. The conference aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, promoting scholarly research and practical strategies for disaster management.
